The more Karma you drink, the more rainforest we protect
Every year Karma supports the 8 communities surrounding Tiwai island. The 8 villages are integral in protecting and conserving the 1,200 hectares of rainforest on the island.
Tiwai Island was Sierra Leone’s first community conservation programme, jointly owned by the 8 villages and managed by several partners. Tiwai Communities Committee (TCC) was formed and has a joint responsibility for the Tiwai Island nature reserve. At 1,200 hectares, Tiwai is one of Sierra Leone’s largest inland islands in the great Moa River and is home to one of the highest concentrations of primates in the world, with 11 species, many birds and at least 123 species of plants. The communities are committed to protecting the island and guarding against poaching, mining and agriculture.
